The tour begins in the morning for a full day wine tour of the Alsace vineyards. The region boasts centuries of wine production with many treasured and sought-after cuvées. Given the German influence in the region, wines here are mostly varietal wines, bottled in the characteristic Alsace tall bottle; flûte d’Alsace. The vineyards are concentrated in a thin band from north to south and protected by the Vosges Mountains in the west. This cooler northern climate is preferred by the mainly white grapes, and it is here that some of the most unique white wines in the world can be found. These include late-harvest wines as well as the rare, highly complex and concentrated ice-wines. Established over 60 years ago, the Alsace Wine Route flows over 170km from the Rhine valley to the Vosges Mountains.
It is considered the most beautiful wine route in France and houses grape varieties such as Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Sylvaner. This tour places you in a backdrop of rolling vine-covered landscapes, perfectly unified with quaint narrowed-street villages, charming flower-boxed houses and distinctive church steeples.
Begin the day with a stop in the Mittelbergheim and Barr wine producing regions, home to the Grand Crus of Zotzenberg, Kastelberg, Wiebelsberg and Kirchberg, with soils particularly favourable for Riesling. Experience your first Alsace wines with tastings of different varietals including Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner and Riesling.
Continue on to the Dambach la ville wine area, considered to be the heart of the Alsace wine region and home to the Grand Cru Frankstein. Riesling and Gewürztraminer are particularly well adapted to the well-drained granite-mica scree soil, which drains water and retains heat during the evenings. Enjoy a second wine tasting session in a typical caveau, the local name for wineries.
Lunch at your leisure.
After some free time for lunch, we'll move on to the wine producing area of the Medieval villages of Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr, surrounded by five Grand Crus appellations: Geisberg, Kirchberg, Osterberg, Schoenenbourg and Sporen.
Riesling is without a doubt the king of grapes in this area, while Pinot Gris, Muscat and Gewürztraminer also produce excellent wines in the neighbouring soils.
Famous wine growers include the Trimbach family who have been making wine here since 1626, or the Hugel family who began shortly after them in 1639!
Not only will you be amazed by the beauty of these two well-preserved and maintained towns, but you'll also be able to complete your Alsace wine tasting experience with a tasting in one of the most highly ranking wineries.
Drop off is at 5:00 PM at Place Gutenberg in Strasbourg.
We recommend our customers from Paris to take the train at least one day earlier to guarantee punctuality on the day of their tour.
