Itinerary

This tour will allow you to discover the province of Quercy. We start off in the pilgrim and fortress village of Rocamadour, beautifully set high up on a gorge of the River L’Alzou, a tributary of the River Dordogne. The village is renowned for its historical monuments, such as the well-preserved fortress that overlooks the village. For centuries, pilgrims, Kings, Bishops and Nobles alike, from many countries have flocked to the village in order to climb the 216 steps up to the shrine of the Virgin Mary and pray at the tomb of early Christian hermit, Zaccheus of Jericho, of whom it is believed the village was given its name. This remarkable natural and religious village attracts over 1.5 million visitors/pilgrims per year.    

After some free time in Rocamadour, we depart for the wonderful village of St Cirq Lapopie, voted France’s most beautiful village. The location of the village was originally selected due to the defensive qualities of the position. It sits on the cliff face 100ms above the River Lot. This unique defensive positioning has helped the village fight off attacks and is possibly the most well-preserved village in the region, an open air museum. The village became extremely popular with artists after it inspired Post-Impressionist Henri Martin to create numerous paintings of the village. St Cirq Lapopie is also the home of the writer André Breton.
