Discover the Mont St-Michel, UNESCO World Heritage

Laid on a small island approximately 1 km away from the coast, the Mont St-Michel is just a dream: a deep sandy bay, a medieval fortified village and a hilltop abbey.  Founded in 709 by bishop Aubert to honor the Archangel Michael, protecting the island from the top of the sharp steeple, you will discover over 1300 years of history. You will start by the Porte Royale, massive piece of defensive architecture, with its draw bridge, its portcullis and its machicolations. In the village, the main road, full of narrow half-timbered houses, brings you zigzagging to the entrance of the abbey. A huge shock! The abbey consists in a granite vertical construction. Numerous gigantic staircases will lead you to the abbey church, a Romanesque style nave with a bright gothic choir. Then, it’s time to stroll through the monastic buildings, known as the Merveille (wonder, in English). The cloister, at first, the work of art of the abbey, with its fine columns and refined sculpted capitals and above all its breathtaking view on the sea! Continue your discovery with the chapter room, the refectory with its incredible stained-glass windows, the guestroom and its huge fireplaces, the knights room covered by amazing rib vaults and a succession of small chapels and crypts. A huge labyrinth! Finish your day wandering on the mighty fortified walls to observe the infinite bay and take your most beautiful pictures…
